Malay Heritage Centre

Leave the mosque and turn left onto Kandahar Street, where you will find the Istana Kampong Gelam, set in a beautiful garden (Tue–Sun 10am–6pm). Its architecture combines traditional Malay motifs with the Palladian style that dates back to the 1840s.

The Malay Heritage Centre 4 [map] (www.malayheritage.org.sg; Tue–Sun 10am–6pm) is housed in the Istana building and has six permanent galleries showcasing interesting regalia of Malay royalty and artefacts pertaining to Malay history and culture. The adjacent two-storey Gedung Kuning (‘Yellow Mansion’), originally built for Tengku Mahmoud, grandson of Sultan Hussein, was bought over in 1912 by Haji Yusoff, a Malay entrepreneur and philanthropist in Singapore. His family owned Gedung Kuning until 1999 when the Singapore government acquired the building.
